Earlier in the New Year, Cam Neely spoke about what the Boston Bruins have planned for the NHL trade deadline, and it's something fans are not use too.
With the Boston Bruins making the playoffs the past seven straight years they aren't use to being sellers at the NHL trade deadline, but that may change this year.
Cam Neely stated that the Boston Bruins have two different paths they can take at the trade deadline, one in which they would be sellers, and one where they would be buyers. There have been reports that the Boston Bruins are interested in acquiring J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks.
If the Bruins do decide to acquire Miller, this would indicate that they would be buyers, and a move like this could make them more of a contender. Miller would certainly speed up the process of the Bruins re-tool, but the Bruins would have to pay a hefty price to acquire him.
Trading for just JT Miller would make the Bruins better, but they wouldn't be considered a 'serious' contender.
It's unclear whether or not the Bruins are going to pursue acquiring JT Miller, but if they do they will unlikely involve a first-round pick in it according to The Hockey Writers.
With the Bruins being serious contenders for awhile, they haven't had many first-round picks. Last year they ended up getting one from the Ottawa Senators in a trade that sent Linus Ullmark to Ottawa.
The organization has no depth because of how long they have been considered contenders. Don Sweeney needs to prioritize bringing in young talented players to add to their prospect pool.
At the end of the day, the Boston Bruins don't have a Stanley Cup winning team, and even adding someone like JT Miller, they still wouldn't. Keeping their first-round pick and building towards the future should be Don Sweeney's main priority as of right now.
