Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has been hard at work, trying to navigate the NHL trade waters to accommodate rookie defenseman Mason Lohrei on the opening night roster. With the deadline looming at 5 p.m. ET, Sweeney and his team have been working diligently.

According to an NHL executive source, Sweeney's been busy on the phones throughout the weekend, recognizing Lohrei's impressive performance in training camp and the preseason. The source said,

"Lohrei earned a spot. Donny and Cam [Neely] know that, and they want him to have it."

This urgency was evident when Sweeney and Neely swiftly exited the stage at the team's Media Day on Monday morning. But before they left, Sweeney shared an update on Lohrei's roster status, mentioning that there's one more decision to make before opening night.

Sweeney has been exploring the trade market for veteran defensemen Derek Forbort and Matt Grzelcyk. One NHL pro scout even noted interest in Grzelcyk due to his offensive capabilities. However, the fate of Forbort remains uncertain.

For Mason Lohrei, the young defenseman, despite having his Providence Bruins gear ready, confirmed that he was still part of the NHL roster. Expressing his desire to play in the league and for the Bruins, Lohrei acknowledged that the decision ultimately hinges on salary cap considerations. He remains optimistic about his abilities and the opportunity to contribute to the team.
