The Boston Bruins need to upgrade the team after a dismal start to the 2024-2025 season. A coaching change is one start to the process, but they could end up moving offensive-defenseman, Mason Lohrei.

The Boston Bruins have assets they could use to acquire better players to bolster the lineup.

One of those is Bruins defenseman, Mason Lohrei whose played 70 total games in the NHL for the B's. Lately he's found himself on the bottom-pairing with Andrew Peeke, and he's scored 14 points(1 G, 13 A) in 29 games this season.

As an young, up-and coming defenseman he could be traded for assets to fit a teams timeline, that is rebuilding where he'd see more playing minutes.

Defensive Regression

But he still has a way to go when it comes to work on his defensive play.

Lohrei has shown promise, there is no denying it. He has offensive skill with the puck, is not afraid to take a risk to make a play up the ice, and his 6-foot-5 frame makes him an anomaly on the ice. That said, defensively he has had a tough time this season, losing track of his role in coverage and at times, seeming lost in his own zone. Lohrei has the highest goals-against per 60 at 5v5 among Bruins defensemen (3.18) and has the second-lowest expected goals-against percentage (47.03%).

If he is moved to a team like the San Jose Sharks, or Calgary Flames it's likely they'll have the assets to move in return for the offensive-defenseman.

While being able to dedicate the proper minutes on the ice, and time to develop Lohrei. The Bruins need to scout their options to make sure, the return fits their window of contention, and if they don't work out be flipped later down the road.

What could the GM Don Sweeney and the Bruins receive in return for Lohrei?

If Boston does decide to part ways with him, they should be getting a solid roster player back - likely a forward - to help aid one of the league's worst offenses. Like the first-round pick, it may be too big of a risk to move a young blueliner with NHL experience, sacrificing the long-term goals for shorter-term success. Judging trade by trade, there may be something out there to make the risk pay off.

Lohrei is in year 2 of a $925K AAV contract, and will be a pending RFA when it expires in 2025.

The upside Lohrei posses could be a desirable trait for contending and rebuilding teams, though they'd have to dedicate time to developing his defensive play.

Lohrei has 70 NHL games under his belt, with 26 points( 5 G, 21 A) scored and a -13 rating on the ice.

He was drafted 58th overall, in the 2nd-round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
