Ever since Connor Clifton inked his professional contract with the Providence Bruins (AHL) back in August 2017, after an impressive four-year stint at Quinnipiac University, he has steadily climbed up the ranks within the organization, establishing himself as a reliable defenseman for the NHL squad.

Under the previous guidance of Bruce Cassidy, Clifton's role seemed somewhat restricted, as he was often confined to a limited role on the ice. However, with the arrival of new head coach Jim Montgomery, a breath of fresh air was blown into Clifton's career. Montgomery provided him with newfound freedom and opportunities to shine during the regular season.

In the Bruins' first-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers, Clifton had a chance to redeem himself after a somewhat lackluster end to the regular season. Unfortunately, he failed to seize the moment. Game 6 proved to be a particularly arduous affair for the 28-year-old, as he experienced what can only be described as the worst performance of his career. In a 7-5 defeat, Clifton failed to register any points, ending the game with a minus 3 rating. His costly turnover in just 13 minutes and 22 seconds of ice time opened the door for the Bruins' Game 7 loss, which ultimately resulted in the team squandering a 3-1 series lead.

Following the disappointing end to the season, Clifton found himself reflecting on his future during his final media appearance on May 2. The subject of contract talks arose, and Clifton revealed that discussions had not yet begun in earnest, expressing his hope to engage in negotiations come late June.

«No, not really. I was hoping to do that in late June, honestly,» he told reporters. «Obviously, with the early departure, there's a lot more time for that in the coming weeks, but no, haven't talked too much about it yet.»

«That's right. I love it here,» Clifton said. «Me and Sweens' had a good talk this morning in our meeting. We'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks.»

As the next few weeks unfold, the hockey world eagerly awaits the developments regarding Connor Clifton's future with the team.
