Bruins Prospect Makes Major Impact Following Promotion
In Gothenburg, Sweden, on December 26, Team Canada launched their quest for a third consecutive IIHF World Juniors title with a convincing 5-2 win over Finland.
Among the notable contributors was Bruins rookie Matthew Poitras, who centered the second line alongside Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan and Buffalo Sabres prospect Matthew Savoie. Poitras showcased his skills by netting an empty-net goal, securing Canada's 4-1 lead with just 2:26 remaining in the final period. The Ajax, Ontario native displayed precision, keeping the play onside before sealing the goal, marking his first point in the tournament.
Poitras had earlier missed a point-blank chance in the first period, with Finland's goaltender Niklas Kokko making a crucial glove save to keep the game scoreless. The young forward demonstrated his playmaking abilities when he intercepted a pass, setting up Savoie for a scoring opportunity.
Despite the strong performance, Poitras finished the game with three shots on goal in 15:27 minutes of ice time, boasting a faceoff win rate of 44.44%. Team Canada's next challenge awaits against Latvia on Wednesday, with puck drop scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET. Bruins fans can catch the action on NHL Network as the tournament narrative unfolds.
