Connor Clifton had by all accounts a career season. The rugged blue-liner put up career high numbers, and was a solid, cheap depth piece on an amazing Bruins team. Unfortunately for Clifton, his future in the black and gold isn't guaranteed, but the defenseman is still holding out hope.

Clifton May Have Priced Himself Out of Boston

Boston Insider and Reporter Joe Haggerty of Boston Hockey Now recently reported that while Connor Clifton has thoroughly enjoyed his tenure in Boston, and would love to return and contribute to this exciting team, the team may have no other option but to move on from Clifton. With all of their existing large contracts on defense, as well as promising prospects in the pipeline, Clifton may not only be too expensive, but could be the odd man out in a year or two.

Clifton spoke on the matter, and the idea of contract extension talks, which have yet to happen.

«That's right. It's a privilege to put on that crest and to compete with guys around this room. It's something I'll never take for granted,»

«I love it here. Me and Sweens [Don Sweeney] had a good talk this morning in our meeting. We'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks.»

It's encouraging to know that Clifton has nothing but warm feelings towards Boston and the Bruins fan base, but he went on to discuss his contract extension talks (or lack thereof), which could leave a big question mark on his future.

«No, not really. I was hoping to do that in late June, honestly. Obviously, with the early departure, there's a lot more time for that in the coming weeks, but no, haven't talked too much about it yet.»

With Clifton set to receive a sizable raise on his next deal, fans have been left to wonder if more players will buy into the discount to win strategy like Patrice Bergeron did, or if the money is more important for a depth guy like Clifton.
