Don Sweeney spotted scouting multiple games: The reason was just revealed
So there was a reason for Don Sweeney scouting multiple NHL games recently. But the disappointing fact could be they have nothing to do with the Boston Bruins' future.
Which, at this point in time for the Bruins seems almost like malpractice.
Sweeney was recently named to the Four-Nation Face Off Management team of Canada.
Two-time Stanley Cup champion Julien BriseBois (Greenfield Park, QC/Tampa Bay, NHL) will make his international management debut as assistant general manager, while Kyle Dubas (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/Pittsburgh, NHL), who served as associate GM at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, has been named director of player personnel alongside general manager Don Sweeney (St. Stephen, NB/Boston, NHL) and associate GM Jim Nill (Hanna, AB/Dallas, NHL).
Honestly, I get that Sweeney has taken on multiple roles in the game of professional hockey, but the Bruins? Shouldn't they come first?
The team is 7-7-2 and is somehow 3rd in the Atlantic Division, but there have been glaring holes on the team even with Tyler Johnson's signing.
There's no criticism for him there, Johnson is a great value add and could be one of the answers needed for the team.
But you lost to the Ottawa Senators in overtime, and where is the answer?
The Bruins generated almost no offense in the third period, tallying zero shots on net despite the score being tied 2-2 the whole 20 minutes. Boston finished with just 16 shots overall and again failed to score on the power play.
Instead, we get The Athletic pounding our head in with glass-half-full narratives, while the Bruins choke against teams who should be easily defeated like the Senators.
If you're looking at the glass half full, that certainly shows that the meritocracy that has made the Bruins' culture so strong over the years remains.
«Charlie Coyle and Charlie McAvoy both said it best: It shows you that we are about trying to play the right way,» Sweeney said. «Results are what matter in this business. We all know that. And David's numbers are not down significantly, in terms of a production standpoint - they're a little off. It's just about forcing the issue at times in his decision-making that bleeds into wherever else is at.»
As Sweeney sees it, the benching was head coach Jim Montgomery giving an opportunity to other players to step up to close out a win. Where's the oversight from Jeremy Jacobs at this point? Isn't he a real penny pincher? Is this the best use of Sweeney's time?
Regardless, the status quo remains.
