Elliotte Friedman just confirmed whether or not a trade for the Bruins is coming
NHL rumors are fresh off the press, as NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast has given us an update on the Boston Bruins.
Friedman believes that the Bruins will work the market to try and get better before July. With rumors of Trent Frederic being on the market, there's some speculation that maybe things have changed.
Friedman writes:
Boston is a little tougher to figure. They've looked around, as you would expect, but they've tried to be patient. They indicated it was important to see how last weekend went, and the answer was «perfect,» with back-to-back shutouts. So, things cooled down. For 48 hours. They went off the rails in Toronto before grabbing a roller-coaster win against Calgary. They are really trying to let this group work out its problems.
Does that mean that Don Sweeney is done hunting for a solution? Considering the news surrounding Trent Frederic, I doubt it.
But Jimmy Murphy who covers the Bruins feels the speculation regarding Frederic isn't making any sense.
Jimmy Murphy quoted a source who said, «Let's just say you're interested in Frederic. Are you willing to trade for him when you can get him just for money next July?»
This could give us an idea that the Bruins and Don Sweeney might be overestimating the value of Frederic in the market.
As we've seen the last few seasons, right-shot defensemen are highly valuable. Gritty, power-forwards? Maybe, and considering he spent money on Max Jones who resides in the AHL for the time being, it's hard to tell where Sweeney will allocate capital next.
The Bruins appear to be at a crossroads in their season at the moment. They had high hopes coming in, but have won just six of their first 14 games. If this inconsistent play continues, they will need to address whether they are truly a team that hopes to contend this season, or if they should think about shopping certain players like Geekie and Frederic. On top of that, if they continue to slide, they will need to consider letting head coach Jim Montgomery go. The next month will be very telling on who this team is, if they hope to contend, and which personnel will stick around for the long term.
Whether it's Morgan Geekie or Trent Frederic, the Bruins will need to make moves quickly before they're blocked from acquiring a player who they need.
For now it looks like they're on the outside of a playoff run looking in.
