A big announcement was just made regarding the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators game moments before puck drop.

Some game changing news was just announced regarding the Bruins-Senators game as it seems like the Ottawa Senators will be starting an unexpected goaltender tonight.

It was announced that rookie goaltender Leevi Merilainen will get the crease tonight for the Ottawa Senators when they faceoff against the Boston Bruins.

The Senators will be without their top goaltender in Linus Ullmark when they faceoff against the Boston Bruins today at 3 p.m. The Ottawa Senators acquired Linus Ullmark from the Bruins in the off-season, but has been out for awhile with an upper-body injury.

Merilainen has a record of 3-0-1 in his past four games with the Senators, and has an impressive .972 save percentage, with a .74 goals against average.

«He's just so cool, calm and collected,» captain Brady Tkachuk said following the club's optional skate on Friday at the Bell Sensplex. «He's almost like a silent assassin. He doesn't say too much, but it's funny in some of the games because he gets all fired up.

«He's competitive and he wants to win. It's great to see the success he's having, not only for himself, but he's also put our team in a great position and he's won some big games.»

The Senators drafted the 22-year-old with the 71st overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Level Draft.

After putting in the work, and impressing the Senators organization, Merilainen has surpassed prospect Mads Sogaard for the No. 1 job with the Senators.

Surprisingly Merilainen has better numbers in the NHL then he has in the American Hockey League, which normally isn't the case, but he had a 7-2-2 record in the AHL along with a .901 save percentage, and a 2.43 goals against average.

Heading into their matchup against the Boston Bruins he has a 5-2-1 record in the NHL with a .930 save percentage, and a 1.84 goals against average, pretty impressive if I say so myself.

On the other hand, Jeremy Swayman has been solid for the Boston Bruins recently. Fans may be in for a goaltender showdown if both goaltenders can play to their ability today.
