The Boston Bruins now sit fourth in the Eastern Conference's wild-card race, with a mandate to make the Stanley Cup playoffs they can't rest on their laurels

They're two points behind the Ottawa Senators for the first spot in the race, and one point behind the Red Wings.

The Bruins would make big moves during the offseason, acquiring Elias Lindholm, and Nikita Zadorov to shore up the top-six and blueline.

Since they've arrived in Boston, it's been a struggle for the team, as they've underperformed under head coach Jim Montgomery, only to be replaced by Joe Sacco.

The Bruins are 6th in the Atlantic, with a 27-24-6 record, and could end up being buyers and sellers at the trade deadline.

If The Bruins Are Buyers

While the Bruins are built to "win now" that feels like a misnomer, as they still need pieces to make it to the playoffs.

The team needs help in the offense, which has been a problem all season. At this point in the year, they rank 25th overall in the NHL, with 2.75 goals for per game.

Below them, are non-playoff teams in a precarious spot if you're the Bruins who are deadset on making the playoffs in 2025.

They can't rely on David Pastrnak to deliver all of the offense, who scored 31 points in 18 games, leading all scorers in the NHL.

They desperately need a jolt of offense, and they may have to spend to find someone who can help.

However, they need to consider they'll have to give up significant pieces including draft picks, and high-end talent to find someone who can help the team long-term.

If They Sell

They could end up selling players who are generating interest like Justin Brazeau, Brad Marchand, and Trent Frederic.

By utilizing talent to shore up the team, they could find themselves in a playoff spot as soon as next season. While this would mean taking a step back, a sell-off could yield significant assets to move the team forward.

While being sellers would mean the team would miss the playoffs for the first time in eight years, it could be a great strategic move if GM Don Sweeney can play his cards right.

The optics may look bad, but when it comes to long-term success, sometimes you need to take a hit if the chemistry of the team isn't working.

And if they do nothing, they'll have solved no issues, since the blue line is a significant weakness for the team, who gives up 3.18 goals per game and is ranked 24th in the NHL. Missing Hampus Lindholm leaves a huge hole in the lineup

There's hope that Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman could find his way back into the .900 but at the moment he's got an expensive contract with $8.25 million, with a .898 save percentage.

Whatever it is, the Bruins need to find a solution that solves their problems as soon as possible.
