At the NHL trade deadline, the Boston Bruins pulled off a move that many fans did not expect to happen, and were not happy with by trading captain Brad Marchand.

Leading up to the deadline there was a lot of speculation that Marchand may be on the move, but as the day went on it looked like the Bruins were going to keep him around and try and work out a contract extension.
That was not the case, as last minute before the deadline finished General Manager Don Sweeney pulled of a trade, sending Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers.
Fans were not happy with the return the Bruins got for their captain. It was revealed that the only piece the Boston Bruins got back for trading Marchand was a conditional second-round pick.
The pick will turn to a 2027 or 2028 first-round pick if Florida wins two rounds of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Marchand plays in at least 50% of the games. The Boston Bruins also retained 50% of Marchand's contract.

Bruins Offered Marchand A Contract Extension

Don Sweeney stated that the Boston Bruins were going to work on getting a contract extension done with Brad Marchand leading up to the NHL trade deadline, and they were, but Marchand was not interested.
Before trading Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, it was revealed that Don Sweeney offered him a two-year contract extension worth $3 million AAV.
The Bruins offered Brad Marchand a two-year extension worth $3M AAV before he was traded, per @Buccigross.
It's understandable why Marchand did not accept that. Even though Marchand is starting to age, he is still playing at an elite level, and will fetch a bigger pay on the open market.
