NHL Insider Reveals Why Brad Marchand Wanted To Join The Florida Panthers
The Boston Bruins and Brad Marchand parted way during the trade deadline, and the reason for it was a gap in contract talks.
The Boston Bruins and
Brad Marchand's relationship came to an end this year, after sixteen years.
Marchand won a Stanley Cup in 2011 with the Bruins and went to the Stanley Cup finals in 2019 under Head Coach Bruce Cassidy. Last season he'd earn the "C" and become a major leader of the squad.
After all of these events, the business side of hockey took over and Marchand would be shipped to Florida.
According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, there was a gap between Marchand and the Bruins during contract negotiations.
«According to sources, Marchand had family considerations and wanted to stay on the East Coast if he could not be in Boston,» Kaplan wrote. «The defending Stanley Cup champions were also an attractive destination because of their commitment to win again. Marchand's former Bruins teammates from the 2011 Stanley Cup-winning team, Gregory Campbell and Shawn Thornton, now work in Florida's front office.»
The Bruins would honor Marchand's request to be sent to Florida, who happily paid a 2nd-round pick in 2027 for the former
Bruins Captain.
Now, he'll get another shot to win a Stanley Cup, this after winning the inaugural Four Nations Face-Off with Canada.
That would be an amazing way to end his 2024-2025, having a shot to win two major championships in one year.
But for now, we'll mourn Marchand's loss as he'll be wearing a new crest on the ice the next time he suits up.
Marchand is currently out of the Panthers lineup for the moment with an upper-body injury.
He could be out for the rest of the regular season
"Obviously a hard guy to replace," Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco said Tuesday. "We're going to miss him, but it creates opportunities for other guys now to step up, some of our younger players, maybe like a (Georgii) Merkulov or a (Matthew) Poitras, it gives them more of an opportunity."
We hope Marchand recovers and returns to his new team's lineup healthy and gets a shot at the Stanley Cup in 2025.
