Despite the Bruins historic win in Philadelphia, Jeremy Swayman held back tears postgame as he dedicated the game to someone very special, that he lost not long ago.
Playing With a Heavy Heart
Swayman stopped 34 of 37 shots he faced to help Boston to a 5-3 win over the Flyers on Sunday, and officially set the single-season win record with 63 on the season.
As the final horn at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia rang, Swayman could be seen pointing up to the sky, before the entire team surrounded the goaltender in a big group hug. Postgame, he was asked the reasoning for the gesture while interviewing with Jackie Redmond of The NHL Network, as the 24-year-old got very emotional.
''Tonight was a really special one. Two years ago today my all-time mentor, Red Gendron, passed away. I was actually in Philly when it happened. I think it was pretty scripted today how it worked out. It was pretty special for that.''
Boston native, Red Gendron, was the head coach at University of Maine while Swayman was the team's starting goaltender from 2017 to 2020. Gendron also held positions with the New Jersey Devils, Albany River Rats (AHL), University of Maine, University of Massachusetts and Yale University. He sadly passed away unexpectedly on April 9th, 2021, at the age of 63.
Swayman matched his career-high of 23 wins on Sunday, and improved his stat line to a 2.22 GAA and a .921 SV%.
