The arena's naming journey started with The Shawmut Center, named after the bank that secured the naming rights. However, before its completion, Shawmut Bank merged with Fleet Bank, leading to a name change before the first game was even played. Fleet Bank, absorbed by FleetBoston Financial, became the new name for the arena.
In 2005, when Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial, the arena underwent another transition. TD Banknorth purchased the naming rights, leading to the birth of TD Garden. But before settling on TD Garden, the arena went through a unique phase known as "YourGarden." Through eBay auctions, individuals had the opportunity to purchase naming rights for a day, with proceeds going to charity.
During this period, names like the KurtCenter and Nocturnal Nannies Arena were proposed, but one name stood out. A Yankees fan from New York City won the rights for March 1st and suggested the "Derek Jeter Center" in a friendly rivalry with his Red Sox fan roommate. However, the name was deemed obscene and rejected.
Ultimately, the naming rights were acquired by Jerry Rappaport, who paid tribute to the Red Sox's 86-year "Curse of the Bambino" by naming the arena "New Boston Garden, Home of The Jimmy Fund Champions." The funds raised from the naming rights were donated to The Jimmy Fund.
TD Garden's rich history and ever-changing nameplates add to its allure and legacy, providing fans with memorable experiences and a connection to the city's sports heritage.
