Three players that need to step up now that Bergeron is gone
With Patrice Bergeron's retirement, the Boston Bruins have a major void to fill at center. President of hockey operations Cam Neely acknowledges the challenge, stating,
"We'll do whatever we can to bolster that position."
Trade talks are circulating, but if they can't secure a deal, the Bruins will turn to their prospect pool.
Matthew Poitras, drafted in 2022, stands out as a promising prospect. The 5-foot-11 center showcased his playmaking abilities in the Ontario Hockey League, earning a three-year entry-level contract with the Bruins.
Brett Harrison, drafted in 2021, also holds potential. The 6-foot-2 forward grew up idolizing Bergeron, and the Bruins hope to develop him into a reliable player.
Georgii Merkulov, signed as a free agent, led the Providence Bruins in offense and could find a spot on Boston's roster.
While none can fully replace Bergeron, these prospects offer hope for the Bruins' competitive future.
Only time will tell if history repeats itself, and a young talent emerges as a breakout star, just like Bergeron did two decades ago.
