The veil of mystery has been lifted, revealing that Girard has enrolled in the NHL/NHLPA's Player Assistance Program.
In a joint announcement, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association disclosed that Samuel Girard, a key player for the Colorado Avalanche, will be on an indefinite hiatus from the team as he seeks care through the Player Assistance Program of the NHLPA and NHL.
According to the terms of this collaborative initiative, Girard will continue to receive his salary while undergoing treatment, and he will rejoin the team once cleared for on-ice competition by program administrators.
Girard himself has taken a proactive approach by acknowledging his struggles, admitting that he turned to alcohol to cope with untreated severe anxiety and depression.
In a statement, he expressed the importance of prioritizing mental health and encouraged others to speak up and seek help if needed.
He extended gratitude to his support system, including his wife, family, friends, teammates, and fans, for their patience, understanding, and ongoing support.
Seeking help when it's necessary is a courageous decision, and there's no shame in doing so. We wish Girard and his family all the best as he embarks on this journey towards mental well-being.
