The Toronto Maple Leafs made significant moves to add toughness to their roster, bringing in Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Ryan Reaves.

However, it appears that one of these tough players, Ryan Reaves, might be on the move sooner than expected.

Recent reports suggest that Reaves could have a short stint in Toronto due to salary cap constraints. With the season approaching, the Maple Leafs are facing cap issues, and sending Reaves down to the minors is one option to free up cap space.

Reaves carries a $1.35 million AAV on his contract, and placing him on waivers could provide the Maple Leafs with the flexibility they need. However, there's a catch any NHL team could claim Reaves and his contract. Yet, the likelihood of this happening is low due to the nature of Reaves' role.

At 36 years old, Reaves is primarily a physical presence on the ice with limited offensive contributions. Teams are generally reluctant to invest in enforcers, especially those entering their late 30s. This move would allow the Maple Leafs to maintain flexibility without risking their younger, more skilled talents.

When the Maple Leafs signed Reaves, they likely anticipated this scenario. However, if another team does claim him, it could be a setback for the Maple Leafs, as they aimed to toughen up their roster. Nonetheless, it would free them from a long-term commitment to Reaves.

Unless a trade materializes, it's probable that Reaves will hit waivers early as a strategic move to secure cap flexibility. His contract and playing style make it unlikely that he'll be claimed, and the coming weeks will reveal if the Maple Leafs take steps to address their cap situation, potentially involving Reaves.
