Bertuzzi ended up leaving the Boston Bruins in the 2022-23 off-season due to the Bruins not having enough cap space to keep him around. Instead he went to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he signed a one-year $5 million deal.
Up until late June, it looked like the Leafs might find a way to keep Bertuzzi, but when Max Domi signed a 4-year deal worth $3.75M, it became clear there wasn't enough money left to re-sign him. So, on July 1st, Bertuzzi headed to the Blackhawks, signing a contract that will keep him in Chicago through the 2027-28 season.
In a game against the Buffalo Sabres, Bertuzzi jumped into action during the 3rd period after Sabres forward Peyton Krebs delivered a big hit on Blackhawks teammate Philipp Kurashev.
The hit triggered a brawl, with gloves and sticks flying everywhere. Despite the chaos, the officials quickly restored order, and Bertuzzi was handed only a 2-minute minor penalty for roughing.
Bertuzzi has always been known for playing with an edge.
His time with the Boston Bruins was short, as the Bruins acquired him at the trade deadline, and ended up losing to the Panthers in the first-round of the playoffs after having a 3-1 lead, but he perfectly fit what it was to be a Boston Bruin. Bertuzzi brings momentum to his team with his physical and gritty play.
