Sweeney needs to get restricted free agent defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo under contract.
While Carlo shouldn't come in too expensive, it might be a different story for McAvoy.
Adam Gretz of NHL NBC Sports put together an interesting comparison of restricted free agents McAvoy and Zach Werenski beside Erik Karlsson and DrewDoughty who both got paid big bucks recently.
Gretz points out that the four are the only defenseman to hit at least 100 games played while averaging at least .50 points per game and a Corsi Perecentage of greater than 52 percent during that part of their careers.
That is extremely elite company for McAvoy to be in.
Karlsson signed a seven year deal worth $45.5million at that point in his career while Doughty signed an eight year deal worth $56million, Gretz adds that if you constructed a similar contract today, it would likely mean $8million a season for McAvoy.
A seven year deal for McAvoy would take him to the age of 28 and come together at $56million total.
That's a massive payday.
Would you be willing to sign McAvoy to this massive type of contract?
