While Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney might be done dipping into the free agent market, he's still got some big contracts to take care of in house.

Defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo remain unsigned restricted free agents looking to eat up a nice chunk of the remaining $8million of the Bruins' salary cap.

There's been lots of chatter that the Bruins need to make a move to free up some cap space.

Before free agency opened, it sounded like the Bruins might buy out veteran forwardDavid Backes after he was a healthy scratch through stretches of the playoffs.

However with the buyout window closed Backes remains a Bruin but could be moved through trade.

Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now speculates that "a league source with knowledge of the situation" claims the New Jersey Devils have discussed a Backes trade.

While the Devils have plenty of cap space, they'd likely need something to sweeten the pot to acquire Backes whether it's a high draft pick or a young prospect.

Backes of course has a modified no trade clause, however he would likely waive it for New Jersey because looking at their roster, there's some ice time up for grabs.
