Despite sitting out the entire 2022-23 season, former Boston Bruins forward and future Hall-of-Famer Joe Thornton reportedly hasn't hung up his skates just yet.

In an interview with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro shed some light on Thornton's current status, suggesting that the 44-year-old still harbors a desire to play.

"Ferraro crossed paths with his old friend and future Hall-of-Famer, Joe Thornton, a few times over the summer. 'He's on the ice all the time. He's never officially retired,' Ferraro remarked. Careful not to speak on behalf of his friend, Ferraro was asked if he thought Thornton might retire. 'No, I don't,' he replied. 'I don't think he will. I think he's just going to hang around. I think he could still play, though. He buzzes.' Does he want to? 'I can't speak for Jumbo, but I do. Deep down, I feel like he does.' Let's find this man a contract,"
suggested Friedman.

The St. Thomas, Ontario native's last NHL appearance was during the 2021-22 season when he played 34 games for the Florida Panthers, notching ten points (five goals, five assists).

The odds of an NHL team signing Joe Thornton seem slim for several reasons, including his extended absence from the game since May 23, 2022. However, Thornton has a strong connection with Swiss club HC Davos, making them a potential destination if he continues his professional career.
