The Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks etched themselves into NHL history for one of the wildest incidents.
The record is for the first forfeited game in NHL history, which occurred during a Blackhawks and Bruins game at Boston Garden, way back on March 14th, 1933. The forfeit isn't exactly the crazy part of the story though, it's what caused the game to be forfeited.
Here's the full story:
''Chicago coach Tommy Gorman punched referee Bill Stewart during an all out brawl following a disputed overtime goal by Boston's Marty Barry. Stewart threw several punches at Gorman before summoning the police to remove Gorman from the visitors' bench. The coach was booted but he took his team with him. The puck was placed at center ice by Stewart after the allotted time for the Black Hawks to return expired. Boston's Cooney Weiland scored without any Hawks on the ice. But instead of calling the game final, Stewart elected to officially call the game a «forfeit» after learning the Black Hawks had no intention of returning without their coach. Ironically, referee Stewart would coach the Black Hawks to the Stanley Cup in 1937-1938.''
