In a recent article we showed how stacked the Atlantic Division will be for the 2022-23 NHL season, but will the Stanley Cup champion be crowned within it?
The Toronto Maple Leafs finished 2021-2022, with 115 points in the NHL, one spot below the Florida Panthers and above the Tampa Bay Lightning. During the off-season, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers both arguably got worse.
The Leafs took the former champions to seven games and despite their loss in the first round, looked good in the post-season.
According to PointsBet, the Maple Leafs have 900+ odds of winning a cup, the same as the Lightning who were recently dethroned by the Colorado Avalanche.
With these changes at a least one (clearly biased media outlet) feels that these changes make the Maple Leafs the Stanley Cup favourites.
It's definitely possible that the Maple Leafs will be the best (regular season) team this season, but the playoffs are a different game, and Toronto should worry about getting out of the first round first.
