Now entering the final season of his contract, Nick Foligno has endured his fair share of scrutiny during his tenure with the Boston Bruins. On July 28, 2021, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney signed UFA Foligno to a 2-year deal carrying an AAV of $3.8M. During his first season with the Bruins, the veteran forward provided minimal production, scoring just two goals along with 11 assists for 14 points in 64 games played.

With the Bruins currently tight to the salary cap, many have criticized the signing harshly. Just as Boston was finalizing their roster before the season started, the 34-year-old Foligno was placed on waivers. He cleared waivers, evidence that no other team is willing to take on his large cap hit.

However, just four games into the season, Foligno's play has been a pleasant surprise. The 6'0 winger has been providing secondary scoring for the Bruins while playing on the 4th line. Foligno has also been given the opportunity to see some 2nd line powerplay minutes under new head coach Jim Montgomery. He has two goals and one assist through Boston's first four games of the season. Already matching his goal total from the entire season last year.

Foligno notched the 500th point of his career in the home opener against the Arizona Coyotes. The Bruins fourth line has also looked good in the early stages of the season. Hopefully for Foligno and the Bruins he can continue to provide the secondary scoring as the season continues.
