Joe Thornton was drafted by the Boston Bruins, but it's safe to say he'll always be remembered as a member of the San Jose Sharks. Since leaving the Bay Area after 15 years, Thornton has played for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers.
Even at 43 years old, 'Jumbo Joe' continues to chase that elusive Stanley Cup, and now, it appears the veteran could be a fit on a one-year contract with a very surprising team.
Calgary Flames' general manager went from having the worst offseason to one
of the best in a matter of one month. First losing both Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau, only to replace them with Nazem Kadri, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar.
And as Steve Macfarlane of Calgary Hockey Now reported, the Flames should be in search of some veteran leadership, hence, Joe Thornton.
While the longtime NHLer has yet to reveal his plans for the future, he was told last week by the Panthers they had no intention of having him return. It is possible that Thornton could accept a PTO to see if there is a fit with the Flames, but at this point in his career, his options are definitely limited.
