On June 7th, the Boston Bruins shockingly fired head coach Bruce Cassidy, as general manager Don Sweeney and co. believed the club needed a new voice behind the bench and in the room, especially with their younger players.

To fill the position, the Bruins hired Montgomery on July 1st, who was most recently an assistant coach on Craig Berube's staff with the St. Louis Blues.
As per GM Don Sweeney:

''For us, it just checked off boxes of a winning history, a coach that has an open mind to communication as well as evolving style of play.''

Jim Montgomery was an NHL head coach with the Dallas Stars from 2018 to 2020. With 113 games behind the Stars bench, he has a total record of 60-43-10, along with a 7-6 playoff record.

Team President Cam Neely believes in Montgomery's direction:

''One of the things that kind of stood out early on was Jim's philosophy of getting our defensemen to move a little bit more on the offensive blue line Whether they end up scoring the goals is going to be one thing, but they can create a little more offense from being fluid on the offensive blue line.''
