In case you missed it, Bruins team president Cam Neely called out head coach Bruce Cassidy and the lack of production and adapting on the power play for the team this past season.
Could former Boston Bruins winger and three-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Recchi help solve the powerplay as an assistant coach for the Bruins next season?
Recchi was recently fired as an assistant coach by the New Jersey Devils on May 4th, 2022. After spending three seasons running the powerplay for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the last two seasons doing the same for the New Jersey Devils last season.
Recchi was one of the best powerplay men as a player in league history, collecting 200 goals and 369 assists in the 1,652 career NHL games. In 180 games with the Boston Bruins from 2008 to 2011, he recorded 42 goals and 65 assists for 107 points, including 18 goals and 19 assists on the powerplay. He also won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011 as a 43-year-old veteran.
On July 18, 2014, Recchi was hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins' player development coach. He was a part of the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup champion teams. He was subsequently promoted to director of player development on June 15, 2017. He was named the assistant coach on July 11, 2017, following the departure of Rick Tocchet, who was named the head coach of the Arizona Coyotes. Recchi did not have his contract renewed by the Penguins following the 2019-20 season. The New Jersey Devils hired Recchi as an assistant coach on September 8, 2020.
