Over the past few seasons, the quality of on-ice officiating, especially in the National Hockey League (NHL), has taken a hit. Fans have been vocal about their frustrations and are suggesting a solution: post-game interviews with officials to shed light on their decisions and hold them accountable.

While the NHL hasn't adopted this approach yet, certain European leagues like the SHL have started interviewing referees after games to explain controversial calls.

NHL Breakers shared on Instagram that European leagues are finding success in improving player-coach-official relationships and boosting accountability through these interviews. This strategy could benefit the NHL as well.

The league has witnessed countless instances of coaches, players, and fans left bewildered by on-ice decisions. Referees, who were once seen as beyond reproach, could gain more transparency through this approach.

The question remains whether NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman would support such a change. Nevertheless, implementing post-game referee interviews might not only address fan dissatisfaction but also potentially revitalize interest in NHL games, a trend that has been declining in recent years.
