When Tuukka Rask retired, it was on his terms; he underwent off-season hip surgery, fought his way back and then realized he was no longer physically capable of playing the game at the level he expected of himself. Ultimately though, Tuukka went out with his head held high and his pride intact. Immediately upon his retirement, talk began to surface about whether or not Rask deserved to have his number raised to the roof of TD Garden.
Rask's career statistics surely would qualify him for this honour. Rask won 308 career games, all with the Bruins and did so with a .921 save percentage and 2.28 goals-against average. Rask is first in franchise history in wins, fifth in save percentage and third in career goals-against average. Clearly, Rask is statistically the best Bruins goaltender of all time.
During his weekly appearance on the Greg Hill Show, former Bruins player/coach Mike Milbury shared his opinion on Rask deserving of these honours:
"I think Rask has been a great goaltender for his career. I think he deserves a pat on the back and a piece of cake on his way out the door. But I don't think he deserves to be in the rafters or the Hall of Fame."
While Mike Milbury is known for his controversial takes, this is one I can't truly get behind. Rask is clearly deserving of all the accolades for his elite career numbers.
