Scoring first in any game is crucial. In the playoffs, even more critical. But in game seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs? It could define the whole series.
Every team that scored first in a game seven of the 2021 playoffs won that game, and the team that has scored first in games sevens has an overall record of 138-46 all-time in NHL history.
Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall was this close to opening the score this evening against the Carolina Hurricanes:
Hurricanes' goaltender Antti Raanta made a spectacular sliding save to keep the score at 0-0. Of course, Carolina would open the scoring not too long after, and that's currently where things sit after the first period.
The Hurricanes also have 3:03 remaining on a Hall double minor for high sticking right after Carolina made it 1-0.
