There's no doubt that Patrice Bergeron is a well-respected player on his team and across the NHL, by players and coaches alike.

Of course, all the focus is on if Bergeron will retire or stay with the club for the upcoming season. The Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy spoke to the media about his captain's decision. He first discussed how the team would fill the spot if Bergeron did decide to retire:

"That would be a conversation we would have to have upstairs because obviously, you're going to need to fill it. The first place you look is, do we have anybody internally that's ready to move up to the number one spot? Secondly, is there anybody in Providence that can fill in if someone else is moving up? Those are questions we have to look at ... Till Patrice makes a decision, it's not something we're right on top of now, but I imagine we'll have to have that conversation."

Cassidy noted that he talked to Bergeron since the season came to an end but didn't want to get into too much detail with the veteran on his upcoming decision:

"He needs his space; we all respect that. That's just the way it is, and when he's ready to have a conversation, I'm sure he'll reach out to whoever he needs to. Right now, I think he needs the time to decompress. It's a big decision, and he needs to take all the time he needs.

The Bruins' management isn't going to force Bergeron to do anything as he has all the respect of everybody in the organization. Whatever he does decide, though, will ultimately affect the club for years to come. Patrice Bergeron is not a player you can ever replace.
