Barry Trotz was surprisingly fired by the New York Islanders on May 9th, 2022, after the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
Even though he got the Islanders into the postseason the first three seasons, Trotz and the club appeared in 49 playoff games, with a record of 28-21, making the Eastern Conference Finals in 2020 and 2021. Trotz had won at least one playoff series in eight straight playoff appearances, winning the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018.
The Jets would be the most obvious choice for Trotz, as Winnipeg is the hometown of the 59-year-old. Winnipeg surprisingly missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017 but has one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in Connor Hellebuyck, who would only benefit from Trotz's stingy defensive coaching style.
For a head coach who is third all-time in wins, basically, every team that is in need of a coach will have interest in Trotz. Other suitors would include the Detroit Red Wings and the Vegas Golden Knights, who recently fired their coach Peter DeBoer.
