Soon after his departure from Boston, Cassidy found a new job as the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights. Meanwhile, the Bruins hired Jim Montgomery, the former coach of the Dallas Stars. The Bruins had a remarkable regular season, winning 65 games and setting NHL records. However, as is often said, regular season success doesn't guarantee anything in the playoffs. Boston discovered this the hard way when they suffered a heartbreaking seven-game defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers, who would go on to become the Eastern Conference champions.
As luck would have it, Cassidy and the Golden Knights faced the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. The series ended with Vegas winning four games to one, including a dominant 9-3 victory in the final game at T-Mobile Arena. The people of Las Vegas were overjoyed, celebrating their first-ever professional sports championship.
Cassidy already has plans for his day with the Stanley Cup. He intends to take it to the Cape, a move that will surely sting Bruins fans who are still upset about their team's playoff collapse and the fact that the coach they fired is now a champion just a little over a year later.
"The Cup is going to the Cape!" Cassidy exclaimed after his team's triumph.
He also expressed his satisfaction at being a winner and not being able to be dismissed anymore.
So, Bruins fans, was it a mistake for Boston to let Cassidy go as head coach last year? The recent events certainly suggest that it might have been.
