After a terrifying moment that saw defenseman Justin Blais suffer a serious injury, he has finally spoken up to express his gratitude for the support he's received.
During Friday's game between the Baie-Comeau Drakkar and Gatineau Olympiques, Blais got into a minor scuffle, took a hard fall, and struck his head on the ice. The impact caused him to start convulsing, and medical staff rushed in to help. The situation was so alarming that officials ended the game immediately, with Baie-Comeau leading 8-2. It was clear that Blais's well-being was the priority.
Fortunately, Blais appears to be recovering well. The Olympiques, with his permission, shared an update on his condition, posting a photo of him giving a thumbs-up, though he's in a neck brace and has visible scrapes on his face.
Seeing Blais in good spirits was a huge relief. Head-first falls are always frightening, and his convulsions added to the seriousness of the injury. Big credit goes to the medical staff for their fast and skilled response in giving him the care he needed.
At just 17, Blais is in his second season with Gatineau and isn't eligible for the NHL draft until 2026. It's tough to see such a young player go through something like this, and Gatineau will likely monitor his recovery closely, especially since head injuries can have lasting effects.
For now, all we can do is wish him a full and speedy recovery. We're sending our best to Justin Blais and look forward to seeing him back on the ice, doing what he loves.
