Boston Bruins Reportedly In Talks To Acquire $11.6 Million Player In Blockbuster Trade
The Boston Bruins need a huge upgrade to the underperforming top-six. Pavel Zacha, Elias Lindholm, and Charlie Coyle have yet to live up to expectations as the Bruins still lack a legitimate 1C.
However, with news of drama in Vancouver the Bruins could benefit from asking in on the availability of both JT Miller, and Elias Pettersson.
After a personal feud between the two centers has made waves through the media, the Canucks want to restore the locker room to a status quo, after toxicity has permeated.
During Friday's «32 Thoughts» podcast, Elliotte Friedman reported the Canucks have indeed had conversations with teams about stars J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson.
«I do think they've talked to other teams about Pettersson. I do think they've talked to other (teams) about Miller,» Friedman said. «I think they prefer to keep both guys, they've seen what they can do. But they're listening.» While the Canucks would love for the players to work through the dispute and maintain a good relationship as teammates, it appears that time has come and gone.
GM Don Sweeney could take advantage of the Canucks situation and could find a true 1st-line center with either player.
The Bruins would have to figure out how to convince Miller to waive his NMC, and Pettersson has a larger cap hit than I'm sure they'd like, but when there's a will, there's a way.
Miller is 31 and signed through 2030, but his cap hit is a reasonable (for a player of his caliber) $8 million. Pettersson makes $11.6 million a year through 2032, but he is just 26 and has many years of his prime left.
Pettersson would be ideal, as his no-trade clause doesn't kick in until the summer, and wouldn't be an UFA until 2032.
Both players have a play style that would fit the Bruin's 200-foot system and have had 100-point seasons in the past.
Miller had 103 points last season and 99 two years before that. Pettersson had 102 points two years ago and 89 last season. Miller has 30 points in 30 games this season. He missed 10 games while taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. Pettersson has 28 points in 34 games. He is currently dealing with an upper-body injury, but is expected to return soon. Both are 200-foot, all-situations players.
Either way, the Bruins need to call GM Patrik Allvin on either forward to see if they could fit them into their future plans.
