With Patrice Bergeron's official retirement, the Boston Bruins are left with a significant void in their leadership team.

According to former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy, Brad Marchand might just be the perfect candidate to fill that role. Cassidy shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Cam & Strick podcast, stating:

«Not that many guys are the perfect mix of everything, right? I think Bergeron was good at that, he led by example. He was still the hardest worker in practice; off ice, he made sure everyone felt welcome ... and set some of those rules that (Zdeno Chara) had put in place. Brad will be a great leader in terms of leading by example, will to win, been there done it. He's got high expectations of everybody. That's just the way he is, there's nothing wrong with that, but how he communicates with those guys will probably be - my guess - his biggest challenge if he's the guy.»

While the Bruins had not held many internal discussions on the captaincy matter as of last month, it's expected that the 35-year-old Marchand will be named captain before the start of the 2023-24 season.

Despite his age, Marchand's qualities make him a strong candidate to take over the room and become the new #1 leader in Boston. His experience, will to win, and high expectations of everyone around him align with the characteristics of a captain, and his leadership by example will be a valuable asset for the team.
