The most recent obstacle for the NHL was the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. The pandemic significantly impacted the league's finances, leading to a reduced salary cap of $1,000,000 per year. This has presented challenges for teams in cap compliance and forced creative maneuvers to facilitate trades.

In a recent interview with SiriusXM NHL, Bettman revealed plans to discuss the return of the World Cup and Winter Olympics returning in 2026 with the NHLPA.
