The Boston Bruins, Joonas Korpisalo, and Bob Essensa have a task. It is essentially giving Korpisalo the chance to be the best backup goaltender he can be.

With Swayman's return, the Bruins are no longer sweating out the prospect of Korpisalo playing a majority of the season.

This is good news, as the goalie played the team's opening night against the Florida Panthers and Sergei Bobrovsky, and the team would score a touchdown on him.

«Korpisalo was not a problem tonight,» said coach Jim Montgomery after the 6-4 loss. «It was the people in front of him. You can't give up four backdoor tap-ins and expect your goalie to make save after save. He made a lot of saves on breakaways. He was good tonight.»

This wasn't
the kind of beginning he pictured having with his new club, as he wanted to improve upon his dismal record from last season. In 2023-2024 he posted a 21-26-4 record, 3.27 GAA, and a .890 save percentage.

He'd give up six goals on 35 shots, and in order to win over fans and pundits he will have to improve his game significantly.

The Bruins need a dependable backup, and Korpisalo is on the Bruins payroll until 2027-2028 with an AAV of $3 Million, while the Senators retained $1 Million, in the deal which sent Linus Ullmark to Ottawa.

The troubling aspect of all of this is, with a terrible Columbus Blue Jackets team in front of him in 2022-2023, he managed to post an 18-4-4 record, in 39 games, with a 2.87 GAA, and a.914 save percentage.

He'd split those thirty-nine games between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings, proving to be a great backup in net.

You'd think Bob Essensa who has essentially been hyped as a goalie whisperer, can turn Korpisalo around.

And given his past successes he should be able to turn Korpisalo into a dark horse for the Bruins, as his 1st game isn't an indicator of how he should play the other split of his games with the team.

If Korpisalo cannot find success in the Bruins system, should they consider trading him for a better option, whether it's in or out of the Eastern Conference?

The Bruins need someone who could shore up Swayman and the Bruins as they attempt to make a run to the Stanley Cup.

If the Bruins are unable to move Korpisalo, it seems this could turn out to be one of Don Sweeney's worst trades as GM yet.
