Shortly after the trade was made, there were rumblings across the league that the Bruins may buy out Korpisalo as the compliance buyouts are set to begin after 48 hours when the Stanley Cup is awarded. But according to Fluto Shinzawa of the Athletic, it appears the Bruins may hang on to him for next season.
Last season was one of the worst seasons for the 30-year-old goaltender as he played 55 games and had a record of 21-26-4 with 3.27 goals against and a save percentage of .890. Those numbers seem to be misconstrued as the Senators were one of the worst defending teams in the Eastern Conference.
Now with the Bruins and a much sounder defence core along with the attention to detail defensively, it's likely Korpisalo's numbers will return to what many we're used to especially when he was with the LA kings. He will also play less games as Jeremy Swayman and is slated to be the new number one goaltender and will take the bulk of the starts.
Korpisalo has four years remaining on his deal and holds a cap hit of $3,000,000 per season. The Bruins will continue to seek out help along their blue line and will give players like Korpisalo more insulation which will help his numbers.
