The Bruins took a gamble at the end of the season when they chose to trade backup goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators prior to signing a new contract with Swayman. This seemed a bit of a gamble as Swayman is still a restricted free agent and Ullmark has one year remaining in his deal holding a cap hit of $5 million.
Swayman showed the Bruins management that he was ready to take the reins of the starting goaltender as he had taken a significant step forward In his game during this seasons playoffs. The Bruins have decided to hold $8.6 million of their cap space to have the room to sign Swayman into a new deal.
But this also could hinder the Bruins as they are unable to add additional depth to their lineup due to the cap being locked up in lieu. The saving grace to this situation is that the Bruins acquired Joonas Korpisalo in the Ullmark trade which will stabilize the net for the time being.
But it's vital that Sweeney finds a way to get this deal done as the Bruins will be weakened with a goalie tandem of Korpisalo and rookie goalie Brandon Bussi to start the season. It's a far cry from what they had as they held the best goalie tandem in the NHL for years.
