The Boston Bruins have to do their best to retool a lineup that has played well enough to hold 6th place in the Atlantic Division.
The team holds a record of 27-24-6 and is still fighting to win a wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
GM Don Sweeney however, isn't resting on his laurels, as the rumor mill has the Bruins working the phones.
According to NHL Insider Dominic Tiano, the Bruins could send forward Trent Frederic to the New York Rangers.
The return would be Chris Kreider and prospect Brennan Othman.
The return for the Bruins would be an absolute blockbuster should Chris Kreider return to form.
In the last three seasons, Kreider has scored 30+ goals or more and has failed to perform up to expectations with the Rangers.
This doesn't sound too dissimilar from Trent Frederic, who has scored 40 points in 2023-2024.
While this year, he's only scored 15 in 55 games. Frederic was a first-round pick for the Bruins in 2016, 29th overall, and has arguably failed to live up to his draft selection in Boston.
If the deal were to happen, GM Don Sweeney would get Kreider, a power-play specialist, and Brennan Othmann one of the Rangers' top prospects.
If Sweeney could do so, it'd be an absolute steal for the Bruins as Othmann could be NHL-ready soon, and give the team more options in March of who to trade.
The Bruins and Don Sweeney should aim to find the players who can push the team back into contention.
Kreider could be a big help if that were to happen, but for the trade to be a winner he'll have to perform like he did the last three seasons in the NHL.
