Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins may have to set up another team meeting, as a recent report has an embarrassing statistic related to their performance this season.

The NHL operates on a playoff structure that takes shape later in the season, usually by November or December we'll know where they stand.

One of them is our ownBoston Bruins which isn't doing so well against teams who seem to be destined for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Dallas Stars are 10-5-0 in and 3rd in the Central Division and primed for a playoff push. While the Bruins abysmal performance sees them let in over 3 goals a game are 3rd in the Atlantic Division, even with a -16 goal differential.

This sounds unlike the Atlantic Division or the Boston Bruins of yesteryear.

But undisciplined play, lack of offense, and sound defense will definitely send you over the brink.

Even then, they can't hold their own against future contenders, which signifies a structural problem at all levels in my opinion.

Nikita Zadarov shared a sobering thought on their play against Jim Montgomery's former team, the Dallas Stars now run by Peter DeBoer, after their 7-2 loss on the 14th.

"We lost every battle. Soft on the puck, soft everywhere. Not finishing checks. We just got embarrassed today."

How much more can the Bruins fans take, when they're used to underperforming, and Montgomery seems to have lost the room?

Is the defense overrated?

This is what the Athletic said about the Bruins defense early in the season:

The big man Nikita Zadorov headlines the Bruins' changes on D this year, and he's an incredibly interesting puzzle piece given his skill set and career to date.

Is he a really talented depth defender who brings size and a deceptive amount of skill? Or, with a high-end partner like Charlie McAvoy, can he be something more?

There were signs in Vancouver, in particular, that it's the latter. So we like this bet, especially given his company in Boston's top four remains high-end, with McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm one of the better 1-2 combos leaguewide.

They were ranked a high-tier defense in October, yet we're in November and they haven't been able help Keep Jeremy Swayman's GAA above .900 lately.
