Former Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara demonstrated remarkable generosity and sportsmanship by participating in the prestigious Boston Marathon.

He dedicated his run to support two charitable foundations: the Hoyt Foundation and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation.

Together, they established the Zdeno Chara Paralysis Grant, providing $14,000 annually to families dealing with paralysis.

The grant symbolizes Chara's 14 seasons with the Bruins. This year's recipient is Vaughn Pfeffer, a Canton resident paralyzed by a spinal cord stroke, whose step-mother also has cancer, and whose father was paralyzed in a bus accident.

Chara surprised Pfeffer at his home, presenting him with the grant's ceremonial check. The collaboration between the foundations highlights sportsmanship, compassion, and the indomitable human spirit.

The grant, combined with previous support, totals $25,000 for Pfeffer, making a significant impact on his life and offering hope for the future. This inspiring endeavor demonstrates the power of unity and the ability to positively transform lives.
