Before that thrill came, the off-season in 2022 was big for the Boston Bruins, but not just with moving players around.
The firing of Bruce Cassidy came during the summer of 2022.
With Bruce Cassidy behind the bench the Bruins qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of Cassidy's six seasons. They lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games in the Eastern Conference First Round last season.
Cassidy went 245-108-46, and 36-37 in the playoffs, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, falling to the St. Louis Blues in seven games.
This move in hindsight looked like the best thing for the organization, after setting an NHL record 65-win season, under Head Coach Jim Montgomery in his first year. But it went all to waste, after a poor showing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Blowing a 3-1 series lead to the No. 8 seed Florida Panthers, all while their former coach Bruce Cassidy, has the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
The Bruins made a lot of strong moves this offseason to put together a juggernaut roster, going well over the cap. The playoff results embarrassed the Bruins after a remarkable season.
Both coaches had successful regular seasons in their first years, obviously one better than the other. Yet, Bruce Cassidy gets the last laugh coaching a strong Vegas team. Trying to earn his first Stanley Cup as a Head Coach.
So it's really up to fans to decide if the Bruins have a better head coach. It will certainly depend on how the next couple years plan out, and how the Bruins can deal with losing their captain sooner rather than later.
