Gilles Gilbert, a veteran NHL goaltender with fourteen years of experience from 1970 to 1983, passed away at 74 yesterday.

Gilbert is most remembered for his time with the Boston Bruins during the 1979 playoffs, where Guy Lafleur's late game-tying goal for the Montreal Canadiens shifted the momentum in their favor.

Gilbert can be seen in this vintage, rare footage below:

Originally drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the third round of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft, Gilbert later joined the Bruins after a trade in May 1973. His stint with the Bruins was the highlight of his career, playing 277 games over seven years, reaching the postseason in each of the first four seasons. Gilbert's impressive record with Boston was 155-73-39, with a .890 SV% and a 2.95 GAA.

After a trade to the Detroit Red Wings in 1980, Gilbert's career saw a decline due to a weaker team in front of him. He played three seasons with the Red Wings before retiring after the 1983 season. Gilbert finished his career with a record of 192-143-60, a .883 SV%, and a 3.27 GAA.

Following his retirement, Gilbert returned to Quebec, where he spent the rest of his life. The entire team at Bruins Insider extends their heartfelt condolences to Gilbert's family during this time of mourning.
