Boston Bruins and GM Don Sweeney may still be holding out on moving Bertuzzi and/or Orlov, which could be for a handful of reasons. But a week from now with the NHL Draft in sight, the Bruins may reach a point where they have no choice and have to cut ties with two fan favourites.
Don Sweeney could move the Bruins signing rights on the NHL trade market or possibly do a sign-and-trade like the New Jersey Devils did this past Friday.
Both Bertuzzi and Orlov are set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1, and both have peaked a lot of interest in teams. As reported by AFP Analytics, both Orlov and Bertuzzi are projected to be two of the highest paid free agents on their new contracts. If that's the case, neither player can fit in with the Bruins current cap unless there is serious cap-maneuvering which is unlikely.
The two players also seem very keen excited on entering free agency this summer so resigning them is pretty far off Don Sweeney's priority list.
Don Sweeney needs to do his best to utilize an active NHL trade market well he can, and bring in some necessary draft capital to help push the team out of cap debt.
