The trade deadline is coming up on Friday and the Boston Bruins may play a big role in it. However, let's take a step back from that, as on this day 21 years ago in 2004, the Bruins made a huge trade a week befor the 2004 trade deadline.

The Washington Capitals sent Sergei Gonchar to the Bruins in exchange for a 2004 first-round pick, a 2004 second-round pick, and Shaone Morrissonn.
The first-round pick ended up being Jeff Schultz and the second-round pick was Mikhail Yunkov.
On this day in 2004, the Bruins acquired Sergei Gonchar from the Capitals in exchange for Shaone Morrisonn, a 2004 first-round pick (Jeff Schultz), and a 2004 second-round pick (Mikhail Yunkov) #Bruins365 #NHLBruins
Gonchar was riding a seven goals and 42 assists season, tallying up to 49 points in 56 games when he was on the Capitals.
When he got to Boston, he put up four goals and nine points in the final 15 regular season games.
In the playoffs with the Bruins, Gonchar tallied a goal and four assists in seven games. The Bruins lost to the Montreal Canadiens in seven games in the first round.
He would then leave Boston that same summer and go sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sergei, now 50 years old, was in the league for 20 years (1994-95 to 2014-15). During those 20 years, he played 1,301 regular season games, putting up 220 goals as a defenseman and 811 points, being a +3. Gonchar was also an elite playoff performer, having participated in 141 playoff contests and had 90 points.
Having 220 goals as a defenseman is really impressive, and his career high in goals in a season was 26 with Washington in the 2001-02 season.
Gonchar even took his talents back to his home country, Russia, during the lockout in the 2004-05 season.
Gonchar is a defensive legend and player, and the Bruins were able to be a part of it, even if it was just for a short while.
