The hockey community is mourning the passing of a 29-year-old hockey player following a heartbreaking announcement.

Today the Toledo Mobsters, a AAA semi-pro hockey team in Toledo, OH tragically confirmed the passing of a 29-year-old hockey player.

Johnny Bonta was a member of the Toledo Mobsters which is a semi-pro hockey club based in Toledo, OH.

The hockey community, and community in Toledo Ohio will forever be affected by the news of Bonta's passing as he was beloved by the community, and his teammates.

The Toledo Mobsters made a heartbreaking post on social media confirming his passing and commemorating his loss today.

On behalf of the Toledo Mobsters Hockey Club it is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Johnny Bonta #13, #8.

Johnny was not only a valued, talented, player on our team, he was a friend, and family to our team and the organization.

We will miss you Johnny! Your family, friends, teammates are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

RIP on the pond in heaven Johnny.

Bonta was a star player in the APHL. In just 12 games with the Mobsters this season he recorded an insane 42 points before his passing.

Johnny Bonta's parents named him John Bonta and raised him alongside his brother, Jacob.

His life was tragically cut short at the age of 29 on January 23, 2025.

His brother left playing hockey and pursued a career as a proven marketing and sales expert.

While his brother Jacob would take a different route then hockey, Johnny Bonta continued to pursue his life long dream of playing professional hockey, and was he ever good at it.

Johnny originally made a name for himself when he first began his career with the Blue Ridge Bobcats which is a team in the FPHL.

Johnny would go on to play in multiple different leagues like the Cincinnati Street Hockey League (CSHL) and the American Premiere Hockey League (APHL).

He was beloved in his community and highly praised by his teammates. He was known to have a positive attitude, and known for his camaraderie with his teammates.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bonta family, his friends, and teammates as they navigate through this though time.
