As the Boston Bruins' hopefuls dip their toes into the pre-training camp waters, the 2023 Prospects Challenge provides a prime opportunity for these up-and-coming talents to flaunt their skills.

Last season marked John Beecher's first full professional year with the Providence Bruins, where he notched nine goals and 14 assists, totaling 23 points in 61 games.

But behind the stat line lies the growth of this 6-foot-3, 215-pound forward.

Ryan Mougenel, the head coach of Boston's AHL affiliate, shared his observations after a rookie camp practice at Warrior Ice Arena. Ryan Mougenel emphasized how Beecher became a dependable presence for the Providence Bruins as the season unfolded.

"By the second half (of the season), he was our go-to guy down there for a lot of situations," Mougenel remarked. "His skating obviously separates him from most of his peers down there. The ability to hold onto the puck, get in, and be the first to pucks is something that he did really well. And then, by the end of the year, we really liked John's willingness to play a physical brand of hockey."

Beecher himself acknowledged his dedication to improving his skills during the offseason, aiming to make a more significant impact with the Bruins organization and earn a spot on Boston's opening night roster.

"(The coaches) just want to see me come out, compete," Beecher explained. "They want to see all the details taken care of, day in and day out. ... Essentially, playing my game and letting the little things sort themselves out, and we'll see where we are at the end of the day."

Having participated in the Prospect Challenge and attended Bruins training camp the previous year. Beecher enters this year's challenge with a greater sense of confidence and purpose.

"I think last year, I kind of came into camp kind of wide-eyed and staring around," Beecher recalled. "I think this year, I have a better idea of what I have to do now that I'm here and what it's gonna take, so I'm excited."

Beecher, a natural center, demonstrated his versatility last season by spending significant time on the left wing, proving his readiness to adapt to the team's needs.

"I enjoyed it. Kind of being able to get that experience under my belt," he said. "But, I've been up the middle for so long now that I'm probably just more comfortable there. But, at the end of the day, it's just whatever they need."

The retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci in the offseason haven't escaped Beecher's notice, presenting a window of opportunity as he heads into camp.

"I think it's definitely something that you look at and it's enticing," Beecher acknowledged. "Everybody coming into camp wants to have a shot, and this year, there's a bunch of opportunity. So, just go into camp and try my best."
