The two players are truly remarkable in their respected skill sets and the argument will never be laid to rest.
Wayne Gretzky was behind the desk for TNT at FLA Live Arena for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers. During the preview, while talking about taping up a hockey stick, Gretzky brought up a story about Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr.
«Bobby Orr only used one strand, sometimes no strands on the blade,» Gretzky said on the broadcast, per Bleacher Report. «One game I was playing, I had no tape on the stick. After the game, my dad said to me, What are you doing?' I said, Well, Bobby Orr plays with no tape.' And he said, Well, you're not Bobby Orr.' I started taping my stick from then.»
A harsh but honest statement from Walter Gretzky at the time, as Orr truly was a true one-of-a-kind player. All thought Gretzky went on to one of his own kind, breaking and making unbelievable records that may never be touched again. Putting up 2,857 in 1,487 career games is an unbelievable feat. Despite all the record breaking Wayne Gretzky holds the Bruins icon in high regard, so much that he called for the NHL to name an award after Orr to better credit the true defenseman in the national hockey league rather than those who simply score the most points. Unfortunately nothing has been brought into the national hockey league, but the CHL does indeed have the Bobby Clarke Award.
The Bobby Orr Trophy represents the Central Hockey League's highest individual defensive award. Previously recognized as the CHL Most Valuable Defenseman Award, beginning with the 197980 CHL season, the Bobby Orr Trophy was named in honour of the Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman.
